In order to support the setup of a Learning Centre in the township of Philippi, South Africa, Edunova is raising funding for this centre by focussing on an event in which John Thole, the CEO of Edunova is participating.
As part of a 12 person team, John is cycling the Coronation Double Century road race (www.coronationdc.co.za) which takes place in Swellendam (South Africa). This involves completing a tough 202km race. The race is a physical as well as mental test and includes two mountain passes – the focus is on teamwork, which is a ‘must’ if the team is to complete the race together. This team has been training for 6 months, on most weekends and weekday mornings, and with less than a month left before race day there are feelings of nervousness and also of excitement. Below is a profile of the race!

It has long been the intention of Edunova to identify some events through which we can generate awareness of the work we do in township schools and to raise money for smaller projects in each of the schools. Edunova is a Section 21 Non-Profit organisation with a Section 18A certificate which enables companies or individuals to make tax deductable donations. Any funds raised will be managed carefully to ensure that they are effectively utilised. The Coronation Double Century would be the first cycling event to be embraced by Edunova that would enable the team to highlight an education beneficiary very deserving of our support.
The Learning Centre is a facility being established in the heart of the Philippi township community. The centre will enable the schools in the surrounding communities to receive daily support to improve their circumstances, access resources and offer the kids, teachers and Principals opportunities to make more effective progress in their schools. There are approximately 35 schools who are located within walking distance of the centre and they will be the primary beneficiaries. There are a further 200 schools in the district who will also be able to access the centre and benefit from the resources located in the centre. The activities in the centre will focus on the development of literacy, numeracy and ICT skills at levels related to the learner, the educator and the school leader.
Any funds donated will be used to refurbish an existing facility and transform it into an environment that is suitable to support the schools communities. The project needs to make some minor construction changes, ensure that the centre is painted in vibrant colours , security is improved and that the other resources necessary are put in place. Progress will be reflected on the Edunova website so that any interested parties and donors can follow the happenings in Philippi!
The capital cost of project is R500,000 and the annual running costs are approximately the same amount.
How much to give? Any donations are very welcome but increments of R250 from individuals and R1000 increments from businesses can be used as a guideline.
