Projects
The Shuttleworth Foundation's tuXlab programme
Edunova was funded by The Shuttleworth Foundation in
2005 to develop and run a 10 week training course in a
cluster of five of its Open Source computer labs, known
as tuXlabs. We continue to act as a critical friend and
offer support to the tuXlab team.
Programme objectives
Edunova aimed to fulfil the following objectives during the course of the project:
-
Define and document a Learning Led tuXlab ICT Skills Building programme
-
Each school to have created a structured approach to using ICT to deliver learning and to have incorporated this into the timetable
-
Curriculum delivery taking place in the tuXLab
-
ICT Champions to have attained a level of e-confidence and be in the process of passing ICT skills on to their colleagues
-
ICT Champions to have participated in two International Computer Driving Licence (ICDL) exams
-
To establish an ICT Forum that meets at least once a month
Project Design
A 3 phased approach:
-
Phase 1 - Setup
-
Phase 2 – ICT educators' skills focus
-
Phase 3 – ICT learners' skills focus
A 10 week programme covering:
-
Basic ICT Skills in OpenOffice Writer and Calc
-
Computers 4 Kids RNCS aligned curriculum software
-
Curriculum integration
-
Feedback
-
Weekly champions' session for all schools in the cluster
-
Weekly facilitation at individual schools during lessons with learners
What did we learn? Recommendations for future programmes
(abridged)
-
Duration – 10 weeks & 3 phases works well
-
A cluster of 5 schools with 4 educators from each school was effective
-
Timing – split the programme over 2 terms
-
Fewer joint cluster sessions – once a fortnight adequate leaving more time working with individuals
-
Cluster sessions are very valuable
-
In cluster and facilitation sessions maintain a mix between educational skillset and basic ICT skillset
-
Cascade skills beyond the champions using the methods detailed in the full recommendations report
-
Training in Writer, Calc and Computers 4 Kids is essential for integrating ICTs into the curriculum
-
ICDL registration will not necessarily improve the outcomes of such a short programme. A “slimmed down” training programme would achieve the desired objectives.
Feedback from educators participating in the programme
